Choose Glass Week – Episode 5

This week is Choose Glass Week!  Spearheaded by Consol, take a gander at their site over here

Todays subject is Things taste better in glass.

Just think of all the yummy things that come in glass…

Coke, in my humble opinion, is sooooo much better in a glass bottle!

Nutella!!

And what about storing things in glass to keep them fresh and tasty?

Lettuce

Salad

And who wouldnt want to devour this cupcake in a jar!?

And lets not forget about ice tea and lemonade

Whiskey

and last but definitely not least… wine!

It doesnt matter what you use glass for, whether its for fun, food or fabulous decorations, you just dont get better than glass 🙂

Moms, babes, Huggies and growing bigger…

Two weekends ago, Huggies hosted a moms and babes get together at River Cafe and I was one of the lucky moms who got to go along.

It was absolutely awesome.  Not only did I get to see a whole bunch of super awesome ladies but I got to meet a whole bunch of super awesome ladies I hadn’t met in real life before too.

I have to admit, I am really sorry I never had Twitter when Aaron was a baby.  Having all these moms in my phone and on my computer has been an amazing experience with Faith.  I know if I have a question all I have to do is tweet it and I have a multitude of answers in a heartbeat.

Im so grateful for all the friends Faith and I have made 🙂

Huggies really went all out with an amazing breakfast spread for moms and kids, a face painter and balloon artist for the kids and a pressie to take home for the babas as well as a bit of Sorbet pampering for the mamas.

Now, Huggies asked me what size nappies Faith wore and I said a size 3.  Lets just say that our Huggies nappies we got are the last pack of size 3 nappies Faith will wear.  My baby is growing and we just bought a pack of size 4 (!) nappies for her…

Oh and before I forget, Huggies was kind enough to give Nicki two extra Sorbet vouchers to give away.  But hurry, you only have until tomorrow to hop on over to her blog and enter!!

Swim fishy swim…

Round about this time last year we started taking Aaron to swimming classes.  We took him to a teacher who had a few kids in the class and was a little kooky and crazy.  Aaron loved him.  The swimming?  Not so much.

Aaron and I spent about 2 months, one lesson a week arguing negotiating how much of Aarons body he would allow to get wet.  By the end of the year we were sitting on the step but only during the last 10 minutes of the class.

In December the teacher went on holiday and told me that he would call me when he was back.  He never did.  I think he just didnt want to deal with Aaron and his water issues.  I then had Faith and I never followed up with lessons in the new year.

Ah yes, water issues.  Lets go back a few years to bathing a new born Aaron.  He screamed.  He cried.  He really did not like bathing.  He especially did not like getting his head wet and to this day washing Aarons hair is a trauma akin to bathing 10 cats in one go.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago.

With summer upon us, swimming lessons became a topic of conversation once again.  Paul got the number of a swimming school from one of the moms at Aarons play school and I gave them a call.  We arranged to have two 20 minute lessons a week.  There are three instructors and each instructor has no more than 4 children at a time.

The first lesson was a disaster.  Aaron screamed blue murder.  We left.

The next lesson he agreed to sit on the side of the step with his feet in the water.  Half way through his ‘lesson’, the one instructor from the ‘baby’ class came to sit on the step with him.  She chatted to him and got him to throw some toys onto the step and then get up and walk to pick them up, she even got him to sit on her lap in the water before getting out the pool.

The next week the same teacher asked Aaron if he would like to come sit on the step in the baby pool with her.  (There are two pools, a large regular pool and a smaller baby pool with two steps and a shallow end, no deep end).  He agreed.  He threw toys on the steps and sat on the top step for most of the lesson.

The 4th lesson was amazing.  He blew bubbles with his face in the water and even let the teacher hold him and take him into the water.

Yesterdays lesson made me cry with pride for my big boy.  He not only got onto the pool noodle (which he had point blank refused to even touch before) but he ducked his whole head under the water.  He even let me go sit in the car instead of by the side of the pool.

I think he is learning to love swimming 🙂  I cannot wait for tomorrows lesson!

Choose Glass Week – Episode 1

This week is Choose Glass Week!  Spearheaded by Consol, take a gander at their site over here

Todays subject is Glass is infinitely recyclable.

Did you know that it takes about 1.2 tons of virgin batch material to manufacture 1 ton of glass?  Also, did you know that it takes less energy and resources to recycle glass?  In fact it takes 1 ton of cullet (recycled glass) to make 1 ton of new glass!  Glass can also be recycled many many many many (you get my drift right?) times.

Basically recycling glass just makes sense!

But wait, there’s more!

Glass can also be up-cycled, not just recycled.

Take a look at these awesome ideas for re-using glass products you all have at home already…

Make a photo frame:

Keep all those baby food, peanut butter and jam jars, print out photos, cut to size and curve into the jars, arrange them on a table or your mantle and enjoy!

Keep your craft string neat and tidy:

Clean the labels off jam jars (with metal lids), take a nail and place it in the centre of the lid, tap it into the lid with a hammer so the sharp bits are inside the jar, place your ball of string in the jar and thread the end through the lid, screw the lid on and there you go!

Make bulb planters:

You can paint the inside of the jars or leave them clear.  Fill with a little potting soil, add a bulb, top with some more soil, water and pop them on a sunny window sill and watch them grow and flower.

Mosaic:

If you have any broken plates or glasses you dont have to chuck them in the bin.  Being very careful not to cut yourself on any sharp edges you can glue the pieces to a ceramic bowl or even to a wooden frame, grout the spaces in between the glass pieces and you have an instant and unique masterpiece.

Of course if you dont want to up-cycle you can recycle either directly with Consol or at The Glass Recycling Company.

Slut Walk Needs YOU!!!!!

We really really do!

You see, we are six individuals who came together to help get Slut Walk Johannesburg off the ground.

We have no funding except what is coming out of our own pockets.

We also have a ton of running expenses.

  • We need t-shirts for the marshals who are volunteering on the day (this is part of getting permission to run the event from local government).
  • We need a venue (this is part of getting permission to run the event from local government).
  • We need Porta-Potties.
  • We need liability insurance.
  • We need printing.
  • We need money…

You can help.

Even if its just R50, every little bit helps.

If you can make a donation please do, if you cant please pass on the message to everyone you know.

THANK YOU!

We have art!

Paul and I have been together for almost 8 years and been married for about 5 and a half years.  We have lived together in his flat for a year and a half before moving into the house we are in now about 5 years ago.

Besides framing some of our family photos and decorating the kids rooms we have NO art on our walls (besides one Jack Vettriano print that was given to Paul as a gift before we met).

Yesterday, we attended the first iPhoneography exhibition in South Africa.  What an awesome event.  What amazing photographs.

We also bought our very first artwork.  An A2 canvas by Jeanette Verster (in fact its the image in this post!).  The added bonus being that the proceeds of the sale go to Team JP!

I cannot wait to get our canvas and put it on our wall!
