Cancer is something that effects everyone. Every single person I know has a story to tell. A family member, a friend, a loss or a story of survival.
Its been just over 10 years since I lost my dad. I think about him every single day. I sometimes even pick up the phone to call and tell him something and then realise I cant.
Paul also lost his dad to cancer. Our fathers are indirectly responsible for how we met
My uncle in the UK is fighting a battle with cancer.
For the longest time I have felt like I need to DO something, something tangable, something with meaning.
Last night, waiting for the baby to fall asleep, the idea of the CANSA shavathon popped into my head. Its something I say I will do, at least spray my hair, every year and for one reason or another I never do it.
I guess I’ve never been ready to do it, and spraying my hair seemed like a waste.
But now I am ready.
The minimum length requirement to donate hair to make wigs is 22cm. My hair is about 44cm!
My brother in law and his amazing fiance are getting married in April, Im pretty sure Megs would not like my shaved head in her wedding photos and I dont particularly want a shaved head at the wedding, so Im only going to do the big cut in May 2012.
Im going to put a ticker up with a countdown. Im hoping I can get a few of you to join me or to make a pledge towards CANSA when I cut my hair.
Please take a look here for more information on CANSA and the Shavathon
You can follow CANSA on FB here or on Twitter here.
Oh my! Was I spoilt. I was invited to the opening night show of African Fashion International (AFI) by Intel SA along with Jenty, Angel, Heidi, Zinhle and Danielle . We got treated to a hospitality lounge, drinks and food and got tickets to see all 5 opening night shows.
The evening started off a little rocky with the organisers at the Sandton Convention Centre being a little disorganised (oh the irony) but once we were inside it was VIP treatment all the way
The shows did run about an hour late so I didnt stay for all of them but the first three shows were fantastic.
Jenty from Jeanette Verster Photography very kindly let me use some of her amazing pictures.
First up Klûk CGDT
The 2nd show was Marianne Fassler
The next show featured Tart and Mataano
Up first: Tart (I just adored their clothes!!!!)
You can see more of Jenty’s amazing photos on her site or on Facebook.
There were also exhibitors and while we were waiting for the first show to start I snapped a few photos with my iPhone…
Then I found these amazing hand made childrens outfits from KIKI Clothing
And the most beautiful jewelry from Unknown Collection
Thank you once again Intel SA for organising an amazing evening out.
This week is Choose Glass Week! Spearheaded by Consol, take a gander at their site over here…
Todays subject is Things taste better in glass.
Just think of all the yummy things that come in glass…
Coke, in my humble opinion, is sooooo much better in a glass bottle!
Nutella!!
And what about storing things in glass to keep them fresh and tasty?
And who wouldnt want to devour this cupcake in a jar!?
And lets not forget about ice tea and lemonade…
and last but definitely not least… wine!
It doesnt matter what you use glass for, whether its for fun, food or fabulous decorations, you just dont get better than glass

Todays subject is Glass is the healthy choice.
For many many years medicine was stored in glass. And in fact most medicine is stored in glass bottles today too.
And like I said…
Even modern medicine comes in glass jars

Todays subject is Glass is infinitely recyclable.
Did you know that it takes about 1.2 tons of virgin batch material to manufacture 1 ton of glass? Also, did you know that it takes less energy and resources to recycle glass? In fact it takes 1 ton of cullet (recycled glass) to make 1 ton of new glass! Glass can also be recycled many many many many (you get my drift right?) times.
Basically recycling glass just makes sense!
But wait, there’s more!
Glass can also be up-cycled, not just recycled.
Take a look at these awesome ideas for re-using glass products you all have at home already…
Keep all those baby food, peanut butter and jam jars, print out photos, cut to size and curve into the jars, arrange them on a table or your mantle and enjoy!
Keep your craft string neat and tidy:
Clean the labels off jam jars (with metal lids), take a nail and place it in the centre of the lid, tap it into the lid with a hammer so the sharp bits are inside the jar, place your ball of string in the jar and thread the end through the lid, screw the lid on and there you go!
You can paint the inside of the jars or leave them clear. Fill with a little potting soil, add a bulb, top with some more soil, water and pop them on a sunny window sill and watch them grow and flower.
If you have any broken plates or glasses you dont have to chuck them in the bin. Being very careful not to cut yourself on any sharp edges you can glue the pieces to a ceramic bowl or even to a wooden frame, grout the spaces in between the glass pieces and you have an instant and unique masterpiece.
Of course if you dont want to up-cycle you can recycle either directly with Consol or at The Glass Recycling Company.
We really really do!

You see, we are six individuals who came together to help get Slut Walk Johannesburg off the ground.
We have no funding except what is coming out of our own pockets.
We also have a ton of running expenses.
You can help.
Even if its just R50, every little bit helps.
If you can make a donation please do, if you cant please pass on the message to everyone you know.
THANK YOU!

Paul and I have been together for almost 8 years and been married for about 5 and a half years. We have lived together in his flat for a year and a half before moving into the house we are in now about 5 years ago.
Besides framing some of our family photos and decorating the kids rooms we have NO art on our walls (besides one Jack Vettriano print that was given to Paul as a gift before we met).
Yesterday, we attended the first iPhoneography exhibition in South Africa. What an awesome event. What amazing photographs.
We also bought our very first artwork. An A2 canvas by Jeanette Verster (in fact its the image in this post!). The added bonus being that the proceeds of the sale go to Team JP!
I cannot wait to get our canvas and put it on our wall!
Please take a moment to read this post about what Slutwalk is about, then come back here and see how you can help!
We need 200 people to volunteer to be marshalls for the event.
We need to submit a list of 200 names and telephone numbers in our application for permits for the march. (We promise no names and numbers will be used for any other purpose than this). We need to do this urgently or we will not be allowed to march!
If you would like to be a marshall on the day, please email slutwalkjhb@gmail.com with the word MARSHALL in the subject line and your name and telephone number in the body.
And please spread the word!
Thank you!
