Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel

I read it and the rest of the series (what was published to then) when I was in standard 6.  It made me think.

We take for granted that we have houses and cars and cell phone (phones of any kind in fact), that we have modern medicine and specialised doctors, that we can hop on a plane and travel to the far side of the world.

We know that a long long time ago there were Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon people and that they learnt how to use fire and hunt and cloth themselves but we (or perhaps this is just me) dont really think about what it would be like to actually live that life.

Jean M Auel’s books take you into that world, yes they are fiction, but the underlying facts are there, she allows us to see what life was like, the hardships and the struggle for survival, and by doing so, to appreciate where we are now and even where we may be in the future.

In short, that book got me thinking!

  1. I’ve also read the series about four times now. I love it. I bought the series so whenever I feel like delving back into that world, I can pick it up and start reading again. She just released a new one a couple of years ago, and now I hear that is a new one coming up. Can’t wait.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and I was seriously miffed that the author made us wait so long for the last one!!
I enjoyed it, but I got fed up that every discovery or invention was credited to Ayla!
