The Pox

We reached a childhood milestone this last week.

Aaron was miserable and moany for a few days.  He woke up covered in spots. Chicken Pox!

pox

Poor kid is covered. Everywhere. He is achy and moany and miserable and sore.

Now we wait to see if Faith gets it…

Flesh – A discussion with my 3 year old

This morning, Faith told me that Michael Jackson has black hair and that his skin is black and that she is flesh coloured.

Where to even start.

I hate, hate, hate that ‘flesh’ is still/even considered a colour.  I have no idea where Faith got the concept from, I spoke to her teachers at school and they said they haven’t taught it to the kids, they speak about pink, peach, chocolate and brown.

I found this image on Google, not sure where it came from originally

I tried to explain to Faith that flesh is not actually a colour, that it is the word we use for {skin, muscle and sinews} in our body. I told her that Michael Jackson is actually brown (yes, I know, a totally different discussion) and that she was pink.  I said that I am also pink and that Aletta, our nanny is brown like Michael Jackson.

She seemed to understand although I think I will have to keep reinforcing the concept.

I never had this issue with Aaron. When he was little he spoke about people’s colour in terms of the clothes they were wearing, for example, the man wearing a blue t-shirt was a blue man, the lady in the pink dress was a pink lady, the kid in the purple shirt was a purple kid.  I still have never had a skin colour conversation with him actually.

Has this ever been an issue with your kids?  How did you deal with it?

Where did my sweet, easy going child go?

Faith has always been my easy child.  Hardly any tantrums, happy to go off on her first day of play school without a tear, does anything her brother wants her to do, goes to Kindermusik and swimming lessons with enthusiasm.  She is a happy, smiley, easy going little girl.

Except for the last few months.  She cries at the drop of a hat.  She refuses point blank to go to Kindermusik, wouldnt even get out the car.  She will swim for 5 minutes of her lesson then howl and perform until I take her out and change her.  She gets teary when I drop her at school.  And last week, after spending the day at her best friends house, the mom called me to say that even though she had been pretty happy most of the afternoon, she would cry at random times and refuse to play.

The only big change is that at the beginning of the year I stared working full time again.  But that was January and this only started in the last month or so.  We discussed that I was going to be going back to work after bringing the kids home from school and having lunch with them.  And she knows I come back every afternoon.

Im at a bit of a loss as to what is making her so very miserable.  I just want her to be happy.

Something that happened yesterday:

You were sick yesterday and I took you to the doctor, afterwards he offered you a sucker which you took, you then looked at him and asked him if you could take one for your brother.  You said please and thank you.  Most impressed with you my angel!

Proud (geek) parent moment

On our first date, Paul and I discussed a variety of topics.  We both knew the relationship would probably work when we discovered that we are both pretty big SciFi geeks.

Our kids are well on their way to being little SciFi geeks too.

Its not uncommon to hear the strains of The Imperial March echoing through the house (they have it on the iPad) while two young {padawans} battle it out with light sabers (they create their own sound effects too) in the play room.

Aaron cannot wait for the new Star Trek movie to come out and loves The Avengers, he has an Iron Man figurine that goes with him everywhere.

Faith will often clutch a towel around her neck and run, fist in the air, shouting Superman, around the house.  She also shows you that Superman can shoot out his eyes, she leans her head forward and squints.

These are the moments that make my geek mama heart proud.

Scary smart

Faith that is.

On Monday Aaron stayed home from school (he had a viral infection and was spiking nasty temps).

Faith informed us that the next day she was going to be sick so she could stay home too.

I laughed it off thinking she would forget about it.

But on Tuesday morning she woke up, coughed and told me she was too sick to go to school!

She is 2 years and 5 months old!

Needless to say, she was actually coughing and icky so I let her stay home with her brother.

I think I’m going to have to watch this child really closely.  Sneaky little thing!

Something that happened yesterday:
I wasn’t home most of yesterday so I will tell you something that happened this morning.  You were brushing your teeth and you turned on the tap to rinse and couldnt turn it off.  You came running into the dining room calling for Aaron to help you.  Once he had you smiled at him and said ‘Hank you Aaaaron’.

Oops! I did it again *sigh*

So about a month ago I made the invitation for Faiths bday party (this year she is only having a school party) but I kept forgetting to take the invite to school to be handed out.

Until yesterday. Yesterday I took the invite to school, it was handed out when the kids were fetched.

This morning we get to school and the teacher says to me “You know Faiths party is on Monday?”

“Um, yes…” I say, wondering were this is heading.

“The 3rd?” she says, eyebrow raised.

“Okaaaaayyyyyy…” Now I have a slight sinking feeling in my tummy.

“Because you put the 5th on the invite and that’s Wednesday and we are closed on the 5th…”

*sigh* So now I have made little notes that will be going home with the kids to say that its actually on the 3rd…

I really really need a holiday!

I forgot to mention…

in this post

Last week, I fetched Faith from school, put her in the car, drove to Aaron’s school, took Faith out the car, went into the school to fetch Aaron and realised that he had Playball and I was only supposed to fetch him in an hours time.

Thank heavens I managed to get us out of there without Aaron seeing us.  HE would have wanted to stop Playball and come home!

Cannot wait for my two weeks leave!
